Unga Teatern is Finland’s oldest professional theatre for children and young audiences. Founded in 1960, the theatre began as a touring company (then known as Skolteatern) and has been based at its home stage, Lillklobb in Espoo, since 1984.

A bilingual theatre working in both Swedish and Finnish, Unga Teatern produces two to three original productions each year for its home stage and for touring. Its artistic programme is further enriched through guest performances and co-productions.

Supporting arts education for children and young people is at the heart of Unga Teatern’s mission. The theatre works closely with day-care centres, schools and other partners, offering audience engagement programmes as well as arts-based training for early childhood educators and teachers. In 2010, Unga Teatern was named Theatre of the Year in Finland.

A Performance for International Audiences

Under himlen, mellan husen (“Beneath the Sky, Between the Houses”) combines dance, theatre and live music in a visually rich and emotionally engaging performance where movement carries much of the storytelling. Because the production relies less on spoken language than a traditional play, it is particularly well suited for English-speaking, multilingual and international audiences. Its themes of hope, longing and community are communicated through a universal stage language that can be experienced across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
