A warm and playful dance theatre performance in the heart of winter.
In the courtyard of a residential neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city, the ground lies bare. It is winter, bitterly cold, yet the snow refuses to fall. Standing by her window, Elfride waits and hopes. Hopes, hopes, hopes…
Dina is waiting too, sitting on the floor outside the room where her father has disappeared behind a closed door. The food remains untouched on the kitchen table. Her mother rushes across the courtyard.
Bernhard has a song inside him. The Painter has a house to finish. Cesi has a violin, and if only it could play the way she longs for it to, the applause would echo across the city.
Under himlen, mellan husen (“Beneath the Sky, Between the Houses”) is a play set in the most ordinary of places, yet told in an extraordinary way. Under the direction of choreographer Carl Knif, dance, theatre and music come together in a warm and playful performance about longing and hope—about what can still happen, despite everything.
Director Carl Knif is an award-winning Finnish choreographer, dancer and theatre director whose work exists at the intersection of dance and theatre. His productions have toured both nationally and internationally. As Carl Knif puts it: “Dance and art offer us limitless opportunities to discover and learn, to see and to be seen.”
Playwright Christoffer Mellgren is an award-winning dramatist and dramaturg who creates innovative plays for children, young audiences and adults. His work combines humour, imagination and thought-provoking questions.
A Performance for International Audiences
Under himlen, mellan husen (“Beneath the Sky, Between the Houses”) combines dance, theatre and live music in a visually rich and emotionally engaging performance where movement carries much of the storytelling. Because the production relies less on spoken language than a traditional play, it is particularly well suited for English-speaking, multilingual and international audiences. Its themes of hope, longing and community are communicated through a universal stage language that can be experienced across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
